Medical Assisting Career Information

Medical Assisting college graduates typically start out working in small practices. Medical assistants usually are "generalists," handling both administrative and clinical duties and report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner on site. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of department administrators. Medical Assistants help with the examination and treatment of patients under the direct supervision of a physician. Medical Assisting college graduates may also interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), records information on patients' charts, draw and collect blood samples from patients, prepare specimens for laboratory analysis, and prepares treatment rooms for examinations.

Medical Assistant positions will work with health practitioners like chiropractors and podiatrists. Other options include working with outpatient care centers, public and private educational services, other ambulatory healthcare services, State and local government agencies, medical and diagnostic laboratories, nursing care facilities, and employment services.

Health Services Salary Information

The earnings of medical assistants vary depending on their experience, skill level, and location. Median annual earnings of medical assistants were $28,000 in 2003.
